TLDR: A 2011 review by one laser-center physician favors longer wavelengths, conservative settings, longer pulses and cooling for laser hair removal for darker skin. Before you book, ask about experience with your skin coloring and your risk of side effects.

A 2011 review by one laser-center physician recommends longer wavelengths, conservative energy settings, longer pulses and skin cooling when you consider laser hair removal for darker skin.

If you remember laser hair removal as an option only for light skin and dark hair, the AAD says this was true in the past. For your plans in Las Vegas, Cleveland Clinic says laser hair removal results last longer than shaving or waxing, with some hair growing back, usually lighter and thinner. Individual results vary. Our team reviewed 12 medical, regulatory and research sources on laser hair removal, from Cleveland Clinic, the AAD, the FDA and six published studies.

What changes with laser hair removal for darker skin?

Dorgham and Dorgham’s 2020 review and meta-analysis of 12 comparative trials, nine of them randomized, in skin types III to VI found people with pigmented skin more prone to laser-related side effects, a reason for careful treatment. The laser wavelength is part of your treatment plan, alongside energy settings, pulse length and skin cooling. In a 2011 review by one laser-center physician, Battle recommended longer wavelengths, conservative energy settings, longer pulses and appropriate cooling to reduce side effects and improve hair reduction in skin of color. It gives you four specific points to raise at your consultation.

Research Finding and limit
Chan and Dover, 2013 In a 2013 practice report on a long-pulsed 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser in Fitzpatrick skin types IV to VI, the authors described effective laser hair removal as possible for people with darker skin with the right treatment settings, but this was a short practice report, not a trial.
Mahmoud and colleagues, 2025 In a 2025 chin study of 55 women with skin types IV, V and VI using 1064 nm Nd:YAG, no adverse events were observed, but the single study covered the chin and the authors called for research on long-term outcomes and broader treatment sites.

A wavelength name is not enough to choose your treatment. The stronger basis is an explanation of the proposed settings, cooling and experience with your skin coloring. Your consultation is the time to ask about those choices.

Why do your hair color and treatment sessions matter?

Dark hair absorbs the most laser heat because it contains a lot of pigment, according to Cleveland Clinic. Laser heat destroys pigment-rich cells. The AAD identifies your hair color, hair thickness, treatment area, laser type and skin color as factors that affect results.

Repeated treatment sessions reflect your hair growth cycle. Cleveland Clinic explains a hair follicle must be in its growth stage for the procedure to work, and follicles reach that stage at different times. A single appointment therefore does not reach each follicle at the right stage. Your plan accounts for repeated visits.

Hair reduction also needs a realistic time horizon. The AAD says most patients go several months or even years after finishing the full series of treatments before hair returns to the treated skin, and when it does, there tends to be less of it, with hairs tending to be finer and lighter. Individual results vary. Maintenance laser treatments are often part of keeping your results going, according to the AAD.

What does the GentleMax Pro Plus record tell you?

Parie uses the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus for your laser hair removal. According to the FDA’s 2020 clearance record for the GentleMax Pro Plus, the device has a 755 nm Alexandrite laser head and a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser head. The same record describes its Dynamic Cooling Device as cooling technology that protects the upper layers of skin with a cooling burst of cryogen.

Long-term measurements in the device record give you a timescale for the hair reduction it measures. The FDA describes a stable, long-term reduction in the number of hairs regrowing, measured at 6, 9 and 12 months after treatment is complete. Your provider reviews your skin and hair at your consultation and sets your plan.

How should you prepare before your appointment?

Sun protection is part of your preparation, not an afterthought. The AAD’s preparation guidance advises against tanning outdoors or indoors and using sunless tanners. It also recommends daily broad-spectrum, SPF 30+, water-resistant sunscreen before you go outdoors. In Las Vegas, sun protection should take priority before you choose a treatment date.

Good pre-treatment care includes what you tell the team. The AAD recommends reporting a recent tan, a tendency to scar, a raised scar, cold sores and any medicine you take before treatment. Its guidance also supports asking about experience with your skin coloring and your risk of side effects.

  • Avoid tanning outdoors, tanning beds and sunless tanners.
  • Apply broad-spectrum, SPF 30+, water-resistant sunscreen each day before going outside.
  • Tell your provider about a recent tan, a tendency to scar or a raised scar.
  • Ask how many of these treatments your provider has performed on people with your skin coloring and whether you have a higher risk of side effects.
  • Follow both your before-treatment and after-treatment instructions, which the AAD says greatly reduces the risk of side effects.

Cleveland Clinic advises shaving the treatment area two to three days beforehand and avoiding waxing, tweezing and plucking there once treatment begins. Your provider gives you Parie’s own instructions. Parie’s laser hair removal aftercare guide covers preparation and sun care before and after treatment.

What should you expect during and after treatment?

Many patients say the laser pulses feel like warm pinpricks or a rubber band snapping against the skin, according to the AAD, though your experience varies. Its guidance says everyone in the room must wear protective eyewear during the procedure. It also lists discomfort, swelling and redness as the most common side effects, usually minor and lasting 1 to 3 days.

Changes in skin pigmentation are possible too. Cleveland Clinic lists hyperpigmentation, or darkening, and hypopigmentation, or lightening, alongside blisters, burns, infections and scars. The AAD suggests a cool compress to ease your discomfort afterward. Its aftercare guidance also calls for keeping direct sunlight from hitting treated skin and avoiding indoor tanning equipment.

Gentle washing is part of your post-treatment care. Cleveland Clinic’s care guidance advises washing with soap and water while your skin settles, without picking or vigorous scrubbing. It also advises avoiding natural sunlight and tanning beds for at least one week after treatment, then using sunscreen whenever you are in the sun. Sunscreen use remains part of care after that first week.

What else should you know? FAQ

Is laser hair removal safe for darker skin?

The AAD identifies laser hair removal as an option for darker skin and says it must be performed very carefully. Cleveland Clinic reports skin lightening mainly affects people with darker skin, especially when an incorrect laser is used at an incorrect setting. You should understand the risks for your skin before treatment.

Will laser hair removal darken or lighten my skin?

Either change is possible in your treated skin, and Cleveland Clinic describes these pigment changes as usually temporary. The AAD lists skin lightening and darkening among rare side effects.

Do darker skin tones need more sessions?

Cleveland Clinic’s cosmetic center says people with light skin and dark hair are sometimes treated more aggressively and with fewer treatment times than people with dark skin, and the AAD says laser hair removal must be performed very carefully in darker skin. The same center says some people need four to six treatments spaced several weeks apart for best results, with results varying greatly from person to person. Parie’s plans run 8 to 16 sessions, and your provider sets your number of sessions.

Which laser wavelength is used for darker skin?

Battle’s 2011 review by one laser-center physician favors the longer-wavelength Nd:YAG laser for skin of color, alongside conservative settings, longer pulses and cooling. Parie’s GentleMax Pro Plus has both 755 nm Alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser heads, according to the FDA’s 2020 clearance record for the GentleMax Pro Plus. Your provider decides your plan, so a research recommendation does not identify the wavelength selected for you.

Does a tan change my laser hair removal plan?

A recent tan is something to report before your treatment. Cleveland Clinic lists reduced effectiveness and side effects as possible consequences of naturally or artificially tanned skin. It advises staying out of the sun as much as possible in the weeks before the procedure.

What should I ask before laser hair removal on darker skin?

The AAD suggests asking how many treatments your provider has performed on people with your skin coloring. It also suggests asking whether you have a higher risk of side effects.
